Latham, NY (06/26/2018) — New York Naval Capt. Lawrence E.,Weill , a Walworth resident, has been awarded the New York State Medal for Meritorious Service and the New York State Conspicuous Service Medal.

Weill was honored for his service from May 2016 to May 2018 while serving as the Western New York commander for the 2,800-member New York Naval Militia and for his work in organizing sucessful training exercises for the Naval Militia.

The New York State Conspicuous Serivice Medal is awarded to members of the New York Military Forces who distinguish themselves by exceptionally meritorious service in a postion of great responsibility. The Medal for Meritorious Service recognizes exceptionally meritorious service or achievement.

The New York Naval Militia is composed of current Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard Reserve members who agree to serve on state active duty when called by the state of New York. They put the skills they've honed in federal military service to work for New York residents.

A small number of Naval Militia personnel are retired military members.

Naval Militia members responded to Superstorm Sandy in 2012, the Buffalo snowstorm in 2014, Lake Ontario flooding in 2017 and snow storms in the Hudson Valley earlier this year.

The Naval Militia also operates a fleet of nine patrol boats which respond to state emergencies, augment law enforcement agencies and support the U.S. Coast Guard.

Weill was recognized as an outstanding leader while heading up the Naval Militia's Western Command. He organized an exercise for Naval Militia forces on Seneca Lake in 2017 which was conducted in conjuncton with Willard Correctional Facility which lowered costs and saved taxpayer dollars. The exercise tested naval militia boat operations , logistics and administrative procedures.

Weill was also recognized for organizing the Rapid Gunwale 2016 exercise which involved the Naval Militia and six law enforcement agencies working together on the Hudson River near Peekskill.

The award was presented to Weill during a June 22 ceremony prior to a change of command ceremony in which responsibility for the New York Naval Militia passed from Naval Militia Rear Admiral Ten Eyck Powell to Rear Admiral Timothy Zakriski.

In civilian life Weill is a technical anaylst.
