174th Attack Wing hosts inaugural 'Runway 5K' at Hancock International Airport

SYRACUSE, NEW YORK (09/15/2022) — The New York Air National Guard's 174th Attack Wing, located at Hancock Field Air National Guard Base hosts the inaugural 174th Attack Wing Runway 5-kilomter race this Saturday, presented by Syracuse Hancock International Airport.

Media are invited to observe the event and speak with Airmen and community runners.

WHO: New York National Guard Airman and Soldiers and 402 registered runners from across the greater Syracuse Community.

WHAT: The first annual 174th Attack Wing Runway 5k.

WHEN: Saturday, September 17. The race begins at 8 a.m.

WHERE: Hancock Field Air National Guard Base Syracuse, N.Y.

Coverage opportunities:

Reporters will have the opportunity to attend the welcome remarks, view the event, speak with military and community members participating in the event, attend the medal/award presentation ceremony, and collect video and still imagery.

Background

At 9,000 feet, the Syracuse airport main runway is 1.7 miles long. A 5k race is 3.1 miles, a little bit less than a run down the length of the runway and back.

The race, hosted by the 174th Attack Wing and presented by Syracuse Hancock International Airport, will give members of the Syracuse area the opportunity to run on an actual runway for a unique experience.

The course will also feature two MQ-9 aircraft on display, highlighting the mission of the 174th Attack Wing.

Arriving or departing aircraft will use the airport's secondary runway during the event. Parking for runners and spectators will be allowed on the base via the Townline Road gate entrance.

174th Attack Wing

The 174th Attack Wing flies the MQ-9 remotely piloted aircraft. From a command center at Hancock Field, members of the wing operate aircraft at locations around the world.

The 174th Attack Wing transitioned from the F-16 Falcon fighter to the MQ-9 in 2010.

The wing also conducts training for the pilot and sensor operator teams which fly the aircraft and the mechanics who keep the MQ-9 flying. The wing trains Airmen from the active Air Force, the Air Force Reserve, the Air National Guard and allied nations.

The wing was the first Air Force unit to fly an MQ-9 from a commercial airport in 2015.
