Air National Guard Major Sean Garry, a Saratoga Springs resident, retires after 29 years of miltary service

Latham, NY (03/31/2017) — New York Air National Guard Major Sean Garry, a Saratoga Springs resident and veteran of the Persian Gulf War and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, has retired from the New York Air National Guard after 29 years of military service.

Garry, who served as both an enlisted Airman and officer during his career, was most recently responsible for coordinating domestic operations training for New York Army and Air National Guard members and units.

Garry enlisted in the New York Air National Guard's 105th Airlift Wing, based at Stewart Air National Guard Base in Newburgh, in 1988. During this time he deployed in support of the 1989 U.S. invasion of Panama, Operation Just Cause.

Garry was commissioned as an officer in 1995 and served as aerial port operations officer, plans officer, mission support group executive officer, and exercise and evaluation team chief for the 105th Airlift Wing.

In 2009 he was assigned to New York National Guard Headquarters where he was responsible for exercise and evaluations.

From 2012 to 2014 he served as the installation deployment officer for the 109th Airlift Wing, based at Stratton Air National Guard Base in Scotia.

He transferred back to New York National Guard headquarters in 2014, where he played a key role in developing and implementing disaster response training exercises.

Along with deploying in support of federal missions in Iraq, Afghanistan, Panama and Saudi Arabia, Garry supported a number of New York State emergency operations to include the state response to Tropical Storm Irene in 2011 and Superstorm Sandy in 2012.

Garry and his wife Barbara have two sons Aidan and Colin.
