Albany resident Dennis Martinez promoted to colonel in the New York Army National Guard

Latham, NY (10/18/2021) — New York Army National Guard Lt. Col. Dennis Martinez, an Albany resident, will be promoted to the rank of Colonel during a ceremony at the New York National Guard's Harlem Armory in New York City on Sunday, October 24.

Martinez, who is originally from Brooklyn, serves as the Division Intelligence Officer for the 42nd Infantry Division, which is headquartered in Troy.

Martinez, who retired from the New York State Police as a senior investigator after 27 years of service in 2017, joined the New York Army National Guard in 1992.

He earned his commission in 1994 through the Empire State Military Academy and was branched as a Military Intelligence Corps officer.

Martinez is a veteran of the Iraq War and deployed with the 42nd Infantry Division to Kuwait in 2020. The division headquarters served as the higher headquarters for Task Force Spartan, the Army elements serving in the Middle East.

Martinez has served in a number of military intelligence positions to include collections officer, intelligence plans officer, Joint Force Headquarters intelligence branch chief and joint plans officer, and deputy division intelligence officer.

In 2005 he served in Tikrit Iraq as the commander of the Headquarters Company of the 642nd Military Intelligence Battalion.

Martinez also served as the aid to the commander of the 42nd Infantry Division.

Martinez holds an Associates of Science Degree from LaGuardia Community College, a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the State University of New York, Albany, and a Master's Degree in Strategic Intelligence from American Military University.

He is a graduate of the Army Command and General Staff College and has attended the Army's Antiterrorism Officer Basic and Advanced Courses.

His awards include the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Achievement Medal , the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War On Terrorism Service Medal, , the Oversea Service Ribbon, the Global War On Terrorism Expeditionary Medal and the Meritorious Unit Commendation.

As a member of the State Police, Martinez served on the Executive Protection Detail for three governors.

He and his wife Victoria have two daughters: Danielle and Dominique; and two sons; Francesco and Dominic.
