Altamont resident Jeffrey Quivey, an Iraq War veteran, is promoted to Sergeant Major in the New York Army National Guard

Latham, NY (12/20/2019) — Altamont resident Jeffrey Quivey, a veteran of the Iraq War, was promoted to the rank of sergeant major in the New York Army National Guard during a short ceremony on Thursday, Dec. 19 at New York National Guard headquarters in Latham.

Sergeant Major is the highest enlisted rank in the Army.

Quivey, who joined the Army National Guard in 2002, currently serves as the senior non-commissioned officer for the New York Army National Guard's military personnel office.

As an infantryman assigned to Charlie Company, 2nd Battalion, 108th Infantry, Quivey served in Samarra, Iraq from February 2004 to December 2004. He joined the Army National Guard's Active Guard and Reserve program as a full-time Soldier in 2006 and has served full-time since then.

Col. James Cahill, the director of the personnel office praised Quivey as "an outstanding leader".

In his remarks Quivey said he'd learned from outstanding officers and sergeants at all levels from his combat service in Iraq as an infantryman to working as an aide to a two-star general.

"At every level of leadership there was a strong group of professionals who taught me a lot," he said.

"I love my job. I love wearing the uniform. I love doing what we do and I love our mission," Quivey said.

Quivey's assignments have included aide to the Adjutant General of New York, a readiness non-commissioned officer and platoon sergeant, non-commissioned officer in charge of mobilization, enlisted personnel manager, and First Sergeant of the 222nd Chemical Company based at Fort Hamilton, Brooklyn.

He is a graduate of the Army's Warrior Leader Course, Basic Non-commissioned Officer Course, and Senior Leaders Course. He is currently enrolled in the Army's Sergeant Major Course.

He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Business Management from Excelsior University.

His awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, The Combat Infantry Badge and the Parachutist Badge. He also holds the Valorous Unit Award and the Meritorious Unit Commendation for his service with the 2nd Battalion, 108th Infantry in Iraq.

Quivey and his wife Tiffany, who is a sergeant first class in the New York Army National Guard, have two daughters, Alexis and Avery.
