Capital District Army Association to Honor Albany County Executive Dan McCoy Saturday
Presentation of the Mary G. Roebling Distinguished Service Award to McCoy, an Iraq War veteran, for his advocacy for military members and veterans
ALBANY, NY (05/04/2018) — The Capital District Chapter of the Association of the U.S. Army (AUSA) hosts the regional gathering of some 100 members this Saturday, May 5, at 7 p.m. at the Albany Hilton Hotel for the annual presentation of the Mary G. Roebling Distinguished Service Award Dinner.
This year's recipient of the award will be Albany County Executive Dan McCoy.
Mary G. Roebling (1905 - 1994) was a successful business woman and the first woman to serve as governor of the American Stock Exchange. Roebling went on to become the first woman to lead a major financial institution as president of the Trenton Trust Company.
Her volunteer efforts in support of the US Military began under President Harry Truman as the only woman member of the Citizens Advisory Committee on Armed Forces Training. That dedication continued for the remainder of her life.
Roebling is considered to some as one of the most prominent and influential advocates of the U.S. military of the 20th century.
County Executive Dan McCoy has worked as a public servant his entire professional career. He is currently a master sergeant in the New York National Guard. Dan deployed to Iraq in 2005-2006 and more recently aided in the National Guard's disaster relief following Superstorm Sandy, Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee.
Since 2013 McCoy has held a special event to honor local veterans of distinction and is a vocal supporter of veteran and military service member issues.
The AUSA First Region includes the six New England states, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware. The 22 chapters across the region include some 13,000 members. Nationwide, AUSA membership is about 115 thousand.
The last time the Capital Region hosted the award ceremony was in 2011 for the presentation to New York State Senator Betty Little for her advocacy on behalf of armed services men and women.
The 2017 regional dinner was held in Eatontown, New Jersey, to present the award to Sheriff Shaun Golden for the support of the Monmouth County Sheriff's Office for its service members and veterans.
