Command Sgt. Major Joseph Landy, a Spiegletown resident and Iraq War veteran retires from New York Army National Guard after 38 years
Latham, NY (08/12/2021) — New York Army National Guard Command Sgt. Major Joseph Landy, a Spiegletown resident, has retired after 38 years of service.
Landy, who works for the Capital District Transportation Authority, most recently served as the senior enlisted leader for the 106th Regional Training Institute at Camp Smith Training Site near Peekskill. The unit conduct military occupation specialty and other training for National Guard Soldiers.
Landy was recognized during a retirement ceremony at which he was awarded The Legion of Merit. This award is presented to mark a career of significant military accomplishments.
Landy enlisted in the New York Army National Guard in 1983 and served as an infantryman. He went on to serve as a rifle squad leader, platoon sergeant, and eventually a company first sergeant in the 105th Infantry.
He later served as an operations sergeant for the 501st Ordnance Battalion (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) and also served as the Headquarters Detachment first sergeant and eventually the battalion command sergeant major.
He deployed to Iraq in support of Operation New Dawn while assigned to the 501st Ordnance Battalion. He was also part of the New York National Guard response to the attacks on the World Trade Center of Sept. 11, 2001.
Landy later served as the Command Sergeant Major for the Camp Smith Training Site, the New York National Guard's training area in the Hudson Valley, before mobbing onto the 106th Regional Training Institute.
Landy holds an Associate Degree in Business Management from Excelsior College. He is a graduate of the Army's Sergeant Major Academy as well as other Army non-commissioned officer schools.
His awards include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Army Reserve Component Overseas Training Ribbon, the National Defense Service Medal and the Army Presidential Unit Citation.
Landy and his wife, Carole, have a son, Joe, and a daughter, Victoria.
