Goshen resident Gurpreet Singh promoted to Colonel in the New York Army National Guard during March 16 ceremony
Camp Smith Training Site, New York (03/23/2023) — Gurpreet Singh, a Goshen resident, New York City Police Department detective, and Afghan war veteran, was promoted to the rank of colonel in the New York Army National Guard during a March 16 ceremony at Camp Smith Training Site in Cortlandt Manor.
Singh is the commander of the 53rd Digital Liaison Detachment, a specialized unit of senior officers and noncommissioned officers who are trained to coordinate between the U.S. military and allied military headquarters.
He also serves as the deputy command of the New York National Guard's Homeland Response Force. This unit is trained to assist civilian officials during chemical, radiological, or biological emergencies and attacks.
Singh joined the New York Army National Guard in 1988 and earned his officers commission in 2003 through the Reserve Officer Training Corps.
He was part of the New York National Guard response the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001, and took part in the response to Hurricane Sandy.
In 2020 he deployed to the Middle East with the 42nd Infantry Division as part of Operation Spartan Shield, the Army's standing deployment in the region.
Singh has served in several positions in the 42nd Infantry Division, to include company commander, battalion operations officer, headquarters battalion commander, and chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear officer.
His last position in the division was a chief of protection.
He holds a Master's in Strategic Studies from the Army War College and Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from John Jay University.
In his civilian job, Singh serves as part of the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force New York City Field Office.
His awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Afghan Campaign Medal, the National Defense Service Ribbon and the NATO Medal as well as the German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge.
He and his wife Donna and two children, Zara, and Zoie.
