Guilderland Resident Michael Alfano promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in the New York Army National Guard

Latham, NY (02/11/2022) — New York Army National Guard Lt. Col. Michael Alfano, a Guilderland resident, was promoted to his new rank during a ceremony at the New York National Guard's headquarters in Latham on Feb. 10, 2022.

Alfano serves as the strategic plans branch chief for Joint Force Headquarters, which is based in Latham.

He entered the military in 1985 when he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps as an infrantryman, serving until 1990 which included assignments such as Okinawa, Japan.

After a break in service, Alfano enlisted in the New York Army National Guard in 1998. He went on to earn his commission as a second lieutenant through Officer Candidate School in 2001.

Alfano is a veteran of the Iraq War, deploying with the 5th Special Forces Group in 2003. Serving as commander of Alpha Troop, 2nd Squadron, 101st Cavalry, he again deployed in 2007 to Afghanistan.

He has served in numerous positions throught the New York Army National Guard including senior officer strength manager for Recruiting Command, joint operations officer for New York National Guard headquarters and traning branch chief.

Alfano holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from Excelsior College and a master's degree in accounting from the College of Saint Rose.

He is a graduate of the Infantry Officer Basic Course, Infantry Officer Captains Career Course, the 42H Human Resource Management Course and the Army Command and General Staff College.

His awards include the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Joint Service Achievement Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War On Terrorism Service Medal, the Global War On Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Afhganistan Campaign Medal, Army Presidential Unit Citation and the Army Combat Infantry Badge.
