Happauge resident receives prestigious Air Force Award

New York Air National Guard Lt. Colonel Keith Sumwalt is recognized with the General Michael P. Carns Award

Latham, New York (06/05/2024) — New York Air National Guard Lt. Colonel Keith Sumwalt, a Happauge resident, has been awarded one of the Air Force's top awards.

Sumwalt, who is currently assigned to New York Air National Guard headquarters in Latham, was recognized for work during 2023 with the award of the Gen. Michael P.C. Carns Award.

Named after a one-time vice chief of the Air Force, the award goes to individuals in the Air Guard, Air Force Reserve, and Active Air Force who best exemplify personal leadership, creativity, and problem solving that are related to policies, programs, or processes of concern to the Air Force.

Sumwalt received the award for the 100,000-member Air National Guard.

During 2003, Sumwalt devised an application that used the Air Force manning system data and Microsoft Excel to calculate the New York Air National Guard's annual economic impact data. His analysis indicated that the Air Guard's five bases and 5,800- Airmen provide a $325 million boost to the New York economy each year.

Sumwalt has been awarded the Air Force Achievement Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal, and the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal.
