Latham resident Paul Hauschen, recognized during Naval Militia retirement ceremony
Latham, NY (05/13/2024) — Latham resident Paul Hauschen, a Gunnery Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps Reserve, and a member of the New York Naval Militia, was recognized during a Naval Militia retirement ceremony held May 10, at Division of Military and Naval Affairs Headquarters in Latham.
Hauschen, who first enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1979, most recently served senior enlisted leader for the Naval Militia's Northern Command. He also served as the communications officer for the Naval Militia's Military Emergency Boat Service and commanded one of the Naval Militia's boat detachments.
Most members of the 3,400- member Naval Militia are simultaneously a member of the Navy, and Marine Corps, and Coast Guard Reserve and put the skills and knowledge they gained on federal service to work for New York.
Hasuchen is one of the small number of Naval Militia members who is not a currently serving reservist. He joined the New York Naval Militia in 2018.
Hauschen was awarded the New York State Conspicuous Service Medal for his Naval Militia Service, and the Naval Militia Recruiting Medal, for his efforts in bringing more people into the Naval Militia.
The New York Naval Militia is one of the components of the New York Military Forces along with the New York Army and Air National Guard.
Before the creation of the Navy Reserve, the Naval Militia served as a seafaring version of the National Guard. The New York Naval Militia is one of the few still in service and is the largest.
Hauschen enlisted in the Active Marine Corps in 1974 and served until 1982 when he left active duty for the Marine Corps Reserve, where he served until 1984.
Since joining the New York Naval Militia in 2018, he has played a key role in Naval Militia operations. He has participated in exercises and recruitment efforts.
He was awarded the New York Naval Militia's Josephthal Award, named after a former Naval Militia commander, which recognizes and outstanding member of the force.
His other awards include the National Defense Service Medal, the Navy Sear Service Deployment Ribbon, the Navy and Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbon, and the New York State Military Commendation Medal.
