Lt. Col. Nick Suhr, a Delmar resident, retires from the New York Army National Guard

Latham, NY (10/20/2025) — Army National Guard Lt. Col. Nick Suhr, a Delmar resident, formally ended his 27-year military career with a ceremony at New York National Guard headquarters in Latham on Friday, October 17.

Suhr, a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and a veteran of the Iraq War, was recognized with the award of the Meritorious Service Medal.

Suhr's final role was as the human resource manager for the 2,459 active-duty members of the New York Army and Air National Guard.

Col. Mark Frank, the chief of staff of the New York Army National Guard, praised Suhr for his professionalism and dedication.

"Nick has been the cornerstone of our professional human resources office here in New York," Frank said. He added that Suhr embodied the Army's values both on and off duty.

Frank added the Suhr has always been "a remarkable friend and colleague."

In his remarks, Suhr thanked the Soldiers and leaders he had served alongside for their support over the years. He thanked his friends and family who came from as far away as California and Florida to attend the ceremony.

He also thanked his wife Katie for supporting their two children throughout his military career.

Suhr enrolled in the U.S. Military Academy in 1998 and was commissioned in 2002 as an artillery officer.

He served with the 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii and deployed to Iraq in 2004 and 2005 as a battery executive officer and company fire support officer in the 2nd Battalion, 11th Field Artillery.

Suhr joined the New York Army National Guard's 42nd Infantry in 2007. In 2011 he became a full-time Army National Guard officer.

His assignments included headquarters company commander, service as a human resource officer at the brigade, division and state headquarters levels, a recruiting company commander, and executive officer of a training battalion.

Suhr's awards include the Bronze Star Medal, a prior award of the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Combat Action Badge, and the Parachutist Badge.

He is a graduate of the Army's Command and General Staff College.

He is currently working as deputy human resource officer for the New York State Division of Military and Naval Affairs' state human resource office.
