Lt. Col. William Hoffman, a Manlius resident, receives Meritorious Service Medal

FORT DRUM, NY (07/19/2021) — New York Army National Guard Lt. Col. William J. Hofmann, a resident of Manlius, was presented with the Meritorious Service Medal during a ceremony at Fort Drum, July 17.

Hofmann received the medal in recognition of his hard work and dedication while assigned as the executive officer of the 427th Brigade Support Battalion, a position he held from 2017 until he assumed command of the battalion in March.

The 427th has units across New York State and provides logistical support to the New York-based units of the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team.

Hofmann joined the Army in 2005 after completing the Reserve Officer Training Corp program at Clarkson University, where he earned a bachelor of science in business and technology management.

Hofmann commissioned as a Transportation Corp officer and, upon completion of Airborne School, was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division's 2nd Battalion, 321st Airborne Field Artillery Regiment as a company executive officer and platoon leader. He deployed to Khowst Province, Afghanistan for 15 months with the 82nd Airborne.

Hofmann also served as a battalion logistics officer and support operations transportation officer, and again deployed to Afghanistan as the commander of the forward support company for the 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment.

After joining the New York Army National Guard in 2011, he served as deputy commander for the 24th Weapons of Mass Destruction Civil Support Team, logistics officer for the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, and both the support operations officer and executive officer for the 427th Brigade Support Battalion.

Hofmann currently serves full-time as deputy director of logistics for the New York Army National Guard at its headquarters in Latham.

His awards include two Bronze Star Medals, a Combat Action Badge, one previous Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal and the Parachutist Badge.

Hofmann and his wife Danielle have three children: Katelynn, Madelynn, and Matthew.
