Major Amy Crounse, a Glenville resident, retires from the New York Army National Guard

Latham, NY (08/02/2021) — New York Army National Guard Major Amy Crounse, a Glenville resident, has retired after a 28-year career in the Army and the New York Army National Guard.

Crounse most recently served as the commander of the New York Army National Guard's Joint Force Headquarters Detachment and as the officer in charge of the New York National Guard's State Partnership Program.

She is a veteran of the Iraq War and also deployed to Ukraine in support of NATO operations there.

She was honored during a July 30 ceremony in which she turned over command of the Headquarters Detachment to Major Doug Berinstein at New York National Guard headquarters in Latham.

Crounse began her career in 1993 when she enlisted in the Army as a Russian language linguist and initially served with the 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, Texas. She also served at the National Security Agency at Fort Meade, Maryland and at the United States Embassy in Moscow.

She joined the New York Army National Guard following the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 and was assigned to the 642nd Military Intelligence Battalion. She received a direct commission as an intelligence officer in 2004.

In 2009, Crounse deployed to Iraq as part of the 53rd Army Liaison Team, where she served as the senior intelligence officer for the personal recovery division for Multinational Forces- Iraq.

After returning from that deployment she was assigned to the Joint Force Headquarters Intelligence Section as the Intelligence and Production Branch Chief.

From 2014 to 2017 she served as the deputy commander of the New York National Guard's 2nd Weapons of Mass Destruction Civil Support Team. She deployed to Ukraine in 2017 as part of a NATO training mission conducted by the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team's headquarters, as the brigade intelligence officer.

She is a graduate of the Army Command and General Staff College, the Military Intelligence Captain's Career Course, and the Civil Support Skills Course. She also holds a Masters of Business Administration from Rochester Institute of Technology.

Her awards include the Bronze Star, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, and the Iraq Campaign Medal.

During her retirement ceremony, Major General Michel Natali, the Assistant Adjutant General, Army for the New York National Guard, presented her with the Meritorious Service Medal and the New York State Long and Faithful Service Certificate.
