Master Sgt. Michael Schin, a Ballston Spa resident, retires after 41 years in the Army National Guard.
Latham, NY (05/16/2025) — New York Army National Guard Master Sgt. Michael Schin, a Ballston Spa resident, marked his retirement from the military after more than four decades of service, with a May 16 ceremony at New York National Guard headquarters in Latham.
Schin, who enlisted in the Vermont National Guard in October 1983, serves as the Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge of the New York National Guard United States Finance and Property Office.
In his civilian job, he works as a federal employee in the New York National Guard's information technology office.
Col. Michael Murphy, the director of the United States Property and Finance Office, praised Schin as a true professional who gets things done and can always be relied upon.
Schin, a veteran of the Iraq War, served as an infantry non-commissioned officer for 29 years in the Vermont Army National Guard's 3rd Battalion 172nd Infantry, and then in the New York Army National Guard's 1st Battalion, 105th Infantry Regiment and 2nd Battalion, 108th Infantry Regiment.
He served as the non-commissioned officer in charge of the 42nd Infantry Division's Inspector General's office while in Iraq. He has also served as a signal corps non-commissioned officer.
Schin received the Army Meritorious Service Medal and the New York National Guard Long and faithful service medal, during the ceremony.
In his remark's Schin said that during his time in the Army National Guard he had "met some amazing people" and "done some amazing things."
The National Guard, he said, is "like a family."
"The people in this place, and this organization, is the world's best kept secret," he said, referring to his service at New York National Guard headquarters.
Schin is a graduate of a number of military schools and information technology training programs and has served in a variety of non-commissioned officer leadership positions during his career.
His awards include the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Overseas Service Medal, and the Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon.
He is married to Kathy Schin, a lieutenant colonel in the New York Army National Guard, who he met when she was a non-commissioned officer. They have a daughter, Evie.
