NY Air Guard resident Lt. Col. David Carrick retires after 39-year military career during February 3 ceremony

Westhampton Beach, New York (02/07/2024) — New York Air National Guard Lt. Col. David Carrick, a Riverhead resident, ended his 39-year military career with the 106th Resvue Wing, during a retirement ceremony on February 3 at the wing firehouse at F.S. Gabreski Air National Guard Base in Westhampton Beach.

During his time at the 106th, Carrick served in five of the wing's squadrons, and was serving as the 106th Mission Support Group deputy commander when he retired.

During his career he supported a number of missions including operations against the Islamic State in the Middle East, as well as ten federal and state activations in support of domestic support missions here at home. This included almost three years of the New York National Guard's support of the state's COVID-19 support. i

Colonel Glyn Weir, the 106th Mission Support Group Commander who presided over the ceremony, praised Carrick for his service and leadership over the years.

"David's journey within the 106th Rescue Wing was nothing short of extraordinary," Weir said.

"His service has been characterized by a relentless pursuit of excellence, selfless dedication, and an unyielding commitment to the mission. I have had the privilege of not only witnessing David's leadership but also his friendship and counsel. His insights, wisdom, and unwavering support have been invaluable to me personally and to the entire Mission Support Group," Weir added.

In his remarks, Carrick thanked the wing leadership, distinguished guests, and his family and friends for their support throughout the years.

"To my wife Kelly, standing by my side for over 31 years, your unyielding support has been my anchor," Carrick said.

"Your strength in uncertain times allowed me to focus on my duties without the burden of fears. To my family, your presence here today is deeply cherished. I thank you for your unwavering love, support, and understanding throughout the years, while providing me with the comfort of knowing that you would look after Kelly and the kids if needed during my many absences," he said.

During the ceremony, Carrick was presented with the Meritorious Service Medal for Outstanding Service, the Air Force Certificate of Retirement and the Presidential Certificate of Appreciation.

Carrick recently purchased a recreational vehicle and said he plans to enjoy retirement traveling the country with his wife Kelly.

"As I retire, I carry with me the profound love for our great country, resting easy in the knowledge that I had the privilege of serving," Carrick said.

The 106th Rescue Wing, based at F.S. Gabreski Air National Guard Base in Westhampton Beach, New York, operates and maintains the HC-130J Combat King II search and rescue aircraft, and the HH-60G Pave Hawk rescue helicopter. The 106th Rescue Wing is home to a special warfare squadron with pararescuemen and combat rescue officers, specializing in rescue and recovery, and deploys for domestic and overseas operations.
