Niagara Falls, New York (12/22/2025) — New York Army National Guard Lt. Col. Joseph Moeller, a Corinth resident and Afghan War veteran, took command of the Army Guard's 2nd Squadron, 101st Cavalry Regiment during a ceremony held Dec. 14 at the unit's Niagara Falls headquarters.

Moeller replaced Lt. Col. Gary Barney, who has commanded the squadron for the past two years.

The 101st Cavalry is headquartered at Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station and has elements in Geneva, Jamestown, and Buffalo.

Col. Bradley Frank, the commander of the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, the squadron's higher headquarters, praised Moeller as an outstanding Soldier and leader.

In his remarks Moeller said it was an "honor and a privilege" to command the squadron. He also thanked his wife Nicole for her support over the years.

"As we move into an era of change and uncertainty, our cornerstone will be building the team, empowering leaders, and realistic training,' Moeller told the unit's Soldiers.

"We will remain a ready and capable force that is always prepared to serve our state and country in any capacity," he added.

Moeller joined the Army after receiving his commission through the Reserve Officers Training Program at Norwich University in 2010.

His most recent assignment was as the chief of operations for the New York City-based Digital Liaison Detachment.

He led a team of Army Rangers, military intelligence Soldiers and Aghan National Police.

While on that deployment he also served as a cavalry troop executive officer.

After joining the New York Army National Guard, he served as an Officer Candidate School instructor and then went on to lead an infantry company in the 2nd Battalion, 108th Infantry Regiment. He also served as the commander of the battalion's headquarters company.

He deployed with the 42nd Infantry Division to Kuwait in 2020 as the chief of current operations. After returning from Kuwait, Moeller served as the operations officer for the 108th Infantry, supporting exercise Northern Strike in Michigan and a deployment of Soldiers to Morocco in 2024 for an exercise called African Lion.

Moeller's awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, and Air Assault Badge.
