NY Army National Guard 1st Lt. Jennifer Alvarez, a Bayside, Queens resident, takes command of National Guard Company

Troy, NY (02/11/2019) — New York Army National Guard 1st Lt. Jennifer Alvarez, a Bayside, Queens resident, took command of the Operations Company of the 42nd Infantry Division during a February 10, 2019 ceremony at division headquarters in Troy, N.Y.

The 42nd Infantry Division has training oversight of National Guard units throughout New England and the Northeast.

The Operations Company constitutes the Soldiers and officers who run the division's command posts. Alvarez is responsible to the administration of the company.

Alvarez enlisted in the Army National Guard in 2010 as a health care specialist assigned to the 466th Area Support Medical Company. She was commissioned through officer candidate school and became a Medical Service Corps Officer in 2015. She graduated from the Army Medical Corps Basic Officer Leadership Course in 2016.

She has served as an ambulance platoon leader and a battalion medical operations officer and a platoon leader for the 2nd Battalion 108th Infantry battalion aid station.

Alvarez holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Bernard M. Baruch College.

Her military education includes the Captain's Career Course, the Health Services Plans, Operations, Intelligence, Security & Training Course, the Company Commander pre-Command Course, the Equal Opportunity Leader Course, and Air Assault School.

Her awards include the Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the New York State Humane Service Medal and the Air Assault Badge.

She is married to Nicole Alvarez.
