NY Army National Guard 1st Sgt. William Perez, a Brooklyn resident, becomes top non-commissioned officer for 719th Truck Company

Camp Smith , New York (07/16/2020) — New York Army National Guard First Sergeant William Perez, a Brooklyn resident, has taken on new duties as the top non-commissioned officer for the 719th Composite Truck Company.

Perez, who works for Robert A.M. Stern Architects in civilian life, official took over his new duties during a ceremony at Camp Smith Training Site near Peekskill on July 15.

As company first sergeant, Perez is responsible for issues effecting the training and readiness of the company's enlisted Soldiers to the commander, Capt. Seun Ogunkoya. He replaced 1st Sgt. Isreal Mahadeo.

The 719th is an element of the 369th Sustainment Brigade which became famous during World War I as the 369th Infantry, the renowned Harlem Hellfighters.

The unit is headquartered at the historic 5th Avenue Armory in Harlem, the home of the Harlem Hellfighters.

Perez, who was born in Brooklyn but grew up in Puerto Rico, joined the New York Army National Guard in 2003 as a utilities equipment repairer.

He has served as a senior equipment repairer, and a platoon sergeant.

Perez deployed to Iraq from November 2004 to January 2006 with the New York National Guard's 145th Maintenance Company, which is based on Staten Island.

He is a graduate of the Army's Warrior Leader Course, the Advanced Leader Course, the Senior Leader Course and the Master Leader Course.

Perez holds a Bachelors of Architectural Technology from New York City College of Technology. In his civilian job he aided in the design of a building at Harvard Law School, the George W. Bush Presidential Library in Dallas, Texas; a 900 foot tall high rise in Chicago, and has worked as project manager for a luxury condominium building in San Francisco.

His awards include the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Army Achievement Medal, the New York State Aid to Civil Authority Medal and the New York State Human Service Medal as well as the National Defense Service Medal.

He and his wife Nilda Garcia-Perez have two sons: William Jr. and Tyrese Mannuelle.
