NY Army National Guard Capt. Amanda Chen takes Command aviation headquarters company

LATHAM, N.Y. (08/31/2022) — New York Army National Guard Capt. Amanda Chen, an Albany, N.Y. resident, took command of the 42nd Expeditionary Combat Aviation Brigade Headquarters Company during an August 28 ceremony in Latham, New York.

The company is made up of the headquarters staff and headquarters support personnel of the aviation brigade.

Chen replaced Capt. Mairim Cosme, from Carmel, N.Y., who recently deployed overseas with the brigade's 3rd Battalion, 142nd Assault Aviation Regiment.

Chen was commissioned in the New York Army National Guard in 2011 as a graduate from the State University of New York at Albany with a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology.

She is a graduate of the Military Police Basic Officers Leader Course, and the Adjutant General Captains Career Course.

Chen's prior assignments include platoon leader, transportation officer, Secretary of the General Staff, and most recently the Battalion Personnel Officer for the 42nd Infantry Division Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, Troy, New York.

During her two overseas deployments she served as a Battle Captain for the 102nd Military Police Battalion in 2013, and a Secretary to the General Staff for the 42nd Infantry Division Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion in 2020.

In her civilian career, Chen is a law enforcement officer for the Albany Police Department in Albany, New York.

Her awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with 2 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Achievement Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal with Bronze Service Stars, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon 2nd Award, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with M Device, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.

The 42nd Expeditionary Combat Aviation Brigade, with headquarters in Latham, N.Y. includes the 3rd Battalion, 142nd Assault Aviation Regiment, the 642nd Aviation Support Battalion, Charlie Company (Medical Evacuation) of the 1st Battalion, 171st General Support Aviation Regiment and other flight, maintenance or support detachments of the 3rd Battalion, 126th General Support Aviation Regiment and 1st Battalion, 171st General Support Aviation Regiment.
