NY Army National Guard Capt. Richard Turner, Verona resident, takes command of 42nd Division Signal Company

Latham, NY (10/31/2019) — New York Army National Guard Capt. Richard Turner, a Verona resident, assumed command of the 42nd Infantry Division Signal Company during an October 24 ceremony at Fort Drum, N.Y.

The 150 member company provides communications support to military units across large distances using satellite communications technology.

Turner was enlisted into the 427th Brigade Support Battalion as an Information Technology Specialist. After six years of enlistment, he entered Officer Candidate School in March of 2012, commissioning as a second lieutenant in August of 2013.

Upon commissioning, Turner attended the Signal Basic Officer Leadership School where he earned the Maj. Gen. Charles Kilbourne Award, a peer-nominated and board-selected honor, is given to an officer who exemplifies the highest standards of military leadership.

Turner was assigned to the 642d Aviation Support Battalion, serving as a Platoon Leader, Assistant Battalion Signal Officer (S6) , and Battalion S6 for four and half years.

In January 2017, Turner was assigned to the 2-108th Infantry Battalion, serving as the Battalion S6.

In November 2017, Turner assumed command of Charlie Company 642nd Aviation Support Battalion at Fort Hamilton, NY.

In April 2019, Turner completed Signal Captains Career Course.

Turner's awards include the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, New York Long and Faithful Service Award, and the Army Service Ribbon.

Turner is a graduate from Syracuse University with a Masters in Information Science and Business Administration.

Turner and his wife Amy and has three children: Emily, Isabelle, and Faith.
