NY Army National Guard Sgt.Major Curtis Moss, a Poughkeepsie resident, named battalion Command Sgt. Major

Courtlandt Manor, N.Y. (07/19/2018) — New York Army National Guard Command Sgt. Major Curtis Moss , a Poughkeepsie resident and Iraq War veteran, assumed the role of top enlisted leader in the 369th Special Troops Battalion during a July 14 ceremony at Camp Smith Training Site in Cortlandt Manor.

Moss now serves as the senior enlisted advisor to the battalion's commander, Lt. Col. Todd Balog. He replaces Command Sgt. Major Andrew Lampkins in the role.

Moss has 26 years of service in the Army and Army National Guard.

The 369th Special Troops Battalion is a component of the 369th Sustainment Brigade which is headquartered at the historic Harlem Armory in New York City.

The unit traces its history back to the 369th Infantry Regiment of World War I, an all-black unit which became famous as the Harlem Hell Fighters during the First World War.

Moss enlisted in the Army in 1987 and served on active duty in Germany and Fort Carson, Colorado before leaving the Active Army in 1991 as a power generation equipment repairer.

He enlisted in the New York Army National Guard in 1996 as a cannon crewman in the 1st Battalion 258th Field Artillery. He was part of the response to the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and served on security duty at John F. Kennedy and LaGuardia Airports in New York City.

In September, 2002, Moss entered the Active Guard and Reserve Program and began serving as a full-time National Guard Soldier.

He has served as a platoon sergeant, unit readiness noncommissioned officer, battalion's operation sergeant, and fires operations sergeant major for 42nd Infantry Division. He deployed to Iraq in 2004 as a platoon sergeant leading 32 Soldiers in convoy and force protection details.

He served as the Operations Sergeant Major for the New York Army National Guard's 53rd Troop Command before moving into his current position.

Moss has completed a number of military schools and has completed three years of college.

His awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
