NY Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Michael Davis wins National Guard Public Affairs recognition for photography

Camp Smith, NY (04/07/2017) — New York Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Michael Davis, a Cornwall resident and a military photojournalist, has received an award for his work from the National Guard Bureau Public Affairs Office.

Davis was awarded second place in the portrait photography category for a photograph of a CH-47 helicopter crewman which he took during a three-week training exercise at Fort Polk, Louisiana in July of 2016.

Davis is the full-time readiness non-commissioned officer for the 138th Public Affairs Detachment.

Winners in the annual National Guard media competition then go onto compete in the Army and Air Force media competitions.

Sgt. Harley Jelis, who also serves in the 138th Public Affairs Detachment, was named Military Photograph of the Year by the Army for his work in 2016.

Davis, who joined the New Jersey Army National Guard in 2010, has served with the 138th Public Affairs Detachment since 2014.

As readiness NCO for the public affairs detachment, he handles the unit's supplies, training and administrative tasks, as well as coordinates unit activities for the detachment commander, while also acting as a photojournalist.

Davis is a graduate of the Defense Information School at Fort Meade, Maryland and was distinguished honor graduate in both the Basic Public Affairs Course and the Public Affairs Advanced Leadership Course.

Davis holds a dual bachelor's degree in English and Psychology from Mount Saint Mary's College and a Master's of Science Degree in Publishing from Pace University.

His awards include several Army Achievement Medals and Army Commendations Medals, the National Defense Service Medal and the Noncommission Officer Professional Development Ribbon.

Prior to becoming a full-time Army National Guard leader, Davis worked for Oxford University Press as a digital publishing analyst, for Toppan Printing, America and for the Academy of Management.

He and his wife Megan have two children; Aidan and Emmett.
