Phelps Community Center hosting free emergency preparedness training at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20

Those who take the class will get a free "go bag" emergency kit for each family that attends

Phelps, New York (05/14/2026) — The Phelps Community Center will host an emergency preparedness program conducted by the New York National Guard on Wednesday, May 20, at 6 p.m.

The 90-minute event is part of the New York State Citizens Preparedness Corps program which teaches New Yorkers how to prepare for a disaster, respond and then recover as quickly as possible.

The Phelps Community Center is located at 8 Banta Street in Phelps.

The training course outlines the ways your family can responding to a natural or man-made disaster.

Participants will be advised on how to properly prepare for any disaster, including developing a family emergency plan and stocking up on emergency supplies.

Participants will receive a training certificate, a family emergency plan booklet, a pamphlet listing recommended items to store, and a starter "go kit" filled with items that can help in an emergency ranging from duct tape and plastic sheeting to a transistor radio.

They will also learn how to report suspicious activity and potential threats to authorities with the free "See Something, Send Something" mobile app.
