Riverhead resident Nicholas Pipczynski promoted to specialist in the New York Army National Guard's 69th Infantry Regiment

Latham, NY (06/21/2022) — Major General Raymond F. Shields, the Adjutant General for the State of New York, announces the recent promotion of Soldiers at the New York Army National Guard's 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry Regiment in recognition of their capability for additional responsibility and leadership.

Promoted Soldiers include Spc. Nicholas Pipczynski, from Riverhead, NY. Pipczynski is an infantryman assigned to Delta Company, 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry Regiment.

The 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry, has a distinguished history that includes service in the Civil War, World War I, World War II and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The battalion is the subject of the Irish folk song "The Fighting 69th" and the 1940 movie "The Fighting 69th" about its exploits in World War I.

In World War II the Soldiers of the 69th invaded Makin Atoll in 1943 and fought on the Islands of Saipan and Okinawa.

In 2004 the battalion deployed to Baghdad, Iraq where it was tasked with securing the road from the Baghdad Airport to the center of the city. At one time this was considered the most dangerous road in Iraq. Members of the 69th also deployed to Afghanistan in 2008.

Army National Guard promotions are based on overall performance, attitude, leadership ability and development potential. These promotions additionally recognize the best qualified Soldiers and attract and retain the highest caliber Citizen Soldiers for a career in the New York Army National Guard.
