Troy resident Lynn Currier retires after 32 years of military service
Latham, NY (11/05/2018) — New York Army National Guard Lt. Col. Lynn Currier, a Troy resident and veteran of the War in Afghanistan, retired from the military during a ceremony held at the National Guard's Joint Force Headquarters here November 4 after 32 years of uniformed service.
During the ceremony Currier received the Army Meritorious Service Medal from Col. John Andonie, the New York Army National Guard Chief of Staff, to recognize her most recent contributions to the force.
Currier enlisted in the Vermont Army National Guard in 1986 and joined the New York Army National Guard in 1990.
In 1993 she earned her commission as a second lieutenant through the Officer Candidate School program. Currier, who was branched as a military police officer, is also qualified as a logistics officer and an adjutant.
She has served in a variety of positions from military police platoon leader to assistant provost marshal of the 42nd Infantry Division. Her most recent assignment was as the Signal Operations Branch Chief with the New York National Guard's Joint Force Headquarters in Latham.
"The Army was my unlikely career path, with all the ups and downs," Currier said. "It's about blooming where you're planted. It's about commitment, service and duty, and trying every day to do the right thing."
Currier thanked her family for their tremendous support of her career, from caring for children during training and deployments to the support of her sister, who also made the military a career.
Her twin sister Lisa Currier also enlisted at the same time in 1986, and continues to serve as a master sergeant in the logistics field.
"Lisa has always been there for both my daughters and son, and I cannot thank her enough for picking up the slack when the Army called," Currier said.
The two sisters deployed together to Afghanistan in 2008. Lynn served with the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team as deputy provost marshal.
"I have had so many great experiences and known so many wonderful people, seen so much of this amazing country, and I have partaken in the camaraderie and pride that comes from being part of something greater than myself, working for something that you truly believe in," she said.
Currier worked full-time as a civilian technician for the New York Army National Guard.
"It is a bittersweet event today, to say goodbye to someone we've worked with for many years," Andonie said. "Lynn has been that type of officer who steps up to the plate, salutes the flag smartly, and gets the job done."
Currier was joined for the ceremony by her mother Elizabeth, sisters Kim, Lori, Lisa and Julie, nieces Jillian, Rhys & Ava Currier, son Brandon and his girlfriend Ashley Burke. Family friends included Samantha and Christopher Adams and Tiffany Noel.
Her awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the German Armed Forces Efficiency Badge, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal and the NATO Medal.
