Waterford resident Timothy Schultz retires from Army National Guard after 40 years of service

Latham, NY (05/26/2023) — New York Army National Guard Chief Warrant Officer 4 Timothy Schultz, a Waterford resident, retired after 40 years of military service during a ceremony on May 25, 2023, at New York National Guard headquarters in Latham.

Schultz, a veteran of the Iraq War, enlisted in the Army as an artilleryman in 1982 and transferred to the New York Army National Guard in 1986.

Schultz served as an enlisted Soldier and noncommissioned officer for 12 years and as a warrant officer for 28 years.

Warrant officers are technical experts with expertise in specific areas like military intelligence, personnel administration, finances, or maintenance.

Major General Michele Natali, assistant adjutant general for the New York Army Guard, praised Schultz for his service over the years.

When the 42nd Infantry Division was preparing to deploy to Iraq in 2004, Schultz played a key role in ensuring the division intelligence section was ready for the mission.

In his remarks, Shultz thanked his family for their support over the years, when he was deployed in Iraq or away on military duties.

He was awarded the New York State Conspicuous Service Medal and a federal Meritorious Service Medal during his retirement.

Schultz enlisted in the Army after graduating high school in Troy. After joining the New York Army National Guard, he trained as an intelligence specialist for the 42nd Infantry Division and served in a variety of intelligence positions.

He reached the rank of staff sergeant before becoming a warrant officer in 1994.

While deployed to Tikrit, Iraq in 2005, Schultz served as an intelligence advisor to the division commander.

In 2007, Schultz became an active-duty National Guard Soldier, as the resource manager for the New York Army National Guard Recruiting and Retention Battalion. He created a resource managers course for the Army National Guard and served as the primary instructor for the class for three years.

He has also served as assistant force integration readiness officer, which required managing new equipment fielding and training for the New York Army National Guard. His final assignment was as the operations officer and deputy intelligence officer for the New York National Guard joint operations section.

Schultz's awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, and the Overseas Service Ribbon.
