Roberts Receives Meritorious Service Medal

The 224th Air Defense Group recently presented service medals for outstanding performance to five New York Air National Guardsmen. Senior Master Sgt. Michael Roberts, Verona, Meritorious Service Medal. A mission crew commander technician with the 224th Air Defense Squadron, Roberts received the award for his outstanding leadership, training management and operational skill. Especially noteworthy were his contributions during nine North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) evaluations. The 224th Air Defense Group (ADG) is composed of the 224th Air Defense Squadron and 224th Support Squadron, located in Rome, and Detachment 1 and Detachment 2 that serve in the Washington, D.C. area. The 224th ADG provides the forces to conduct the Eastern Air Defense Sector's (EADS) mission. Rude Receives Meritorious Service Medal

The 224th Air Defense Group recently presented service medals for outstanding performance to five New York Air National Guardsmen. Master Sgt. Shane Rude, Boonville, Meritorious Service Medal. A member of the 224th Support Squadron's Security Forces, Rude expertly managed the installation of electronic security enhancements and provided superior supervision and leadership as a flight commander. The 224th Air Defense Group (ADG) is composed of the 224th Air Defense Squadron and 224th Support Squadron, located in Rome, and Detachment 1 and Detachment 2 that serve in the Washington, D.C. area. The 224th ADG provides the forces to conduct the Eastern Air Defense Sector's (EADS) mission. Gentile Receives Air Force Commendation Medal

The 224th Air Defense Group recently presented service medals for outstanding performance to five New York Air National Guardsmen. 2nd Lt. Philip Gentile, Whitesboro, Air Force Commendation Medal. An air battle manager at the 224th Air Defense Squadron, Gentile received the medal for his work as a staff sergeant prior to becoming a commissioned officer. Gentile excelled in various operational qualifications and performed superbly during support missions for presidential flights. He also coordinated 148 training events, providing nearly 500 hours of instruction to 20 students. The 224th Air Defense Group (ADG) is composed of the 224th Air Defense Squadron and 224th Support Squadron, located in Rome, and Detachment 1 and Detachment 2 that serve in the Washington, D.C. area. The 224th ADG provides the forces to conduct the Eastern Air Defense Sector's (EADS) mission. Johnson Receives Air Force Achievement Medal

The 224th Air Defense Group recently presented service medals for outstanding performance to five New York Air National Guardsmen. Tech. Sgt. Heather Johnson, Rome, Air Force Achievement Medal. An air surveillance technician with the 224th Air Defense Squadron, Johnson superbly sorted and validated more than 2,500 radar tracks of interest during EADS' enforcement of 31 temporary flight restrictions. She also instructed during 28 alert operations, conducting more than 500 hours of training. The 224th Air Defense Group (ADG) is composed of the 224th Air Defense Squadron and 224th Support Squadron, located in Rome, and Detachment 1 and Detachment 2 that serve in the Washington, D.C. area. Army National Guard Soldiers begin military careers

Major General Ray Shields, the Adjutant General of New York, announces the recent service accomplishment of members of the New York Army National Guard in recognition of their initial commitment to serve community, state and nation. The newest Citizen Soldiers to complete Army basic combat training and advanced individual training will now be welcomed to their units during their next drill assembly with the New York Army National Guard. The transition marks their completion of the National Guard Recruit Sustainment Program, a preparatory training program that provides new recruits with training, lessons and skills to excel at their initial military training. The New York Army National Guard welcomed 110 new Soldiers to their units during the ceremonies around the state this spring.

New York Air National Guard Senior Master Sergeant Sandra l. Fisher, a resident of Syracuse, N.Y., was recently awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for outstanding meritorious achievement from 2014 to 2019 while assigned to the 174th Medical Group and the 174th Attack Wing, Office of the Inspector General. She is currently on a special duty assignment with the 174th Attack Wing Inspector General office from her prior service in the 174th Medical Group where she served as the senior NCO in charge of Health Service Administration.

A resident of Holbrook, N.Y., and member of the New York Army National Guard won the National Guard's Best Warrior Competition for the northeast region at the Regional Training Institute here which was held April 29 to May 2. Cpl. Joseph Ryan, an assistant operations specialist assigned to Headquarters Company, 1st battalion, 69th Infantry Regiment, New York Army National Guard, won in the enlisted category. Ryan was also sponsored by Sgt. Ilya Titov, who was last year's winner.

Sgt. 1st Class Martin Cozens, a member of the New York Army National Guard and a resident of Greenwood Lake, NY, won the National Guard's Best Warrior Competition for the northeast region at the Regional Training Institute here which was held April 29 to May 2

Greenwood Lake resident and member of the New York Army National Guard won the National Guard's Best Warrior Competition for the northeast region at the Regional Training Institute here which was held April 29 to May 2. Sgt. 1st Class Martin Cozens, a platoon sergeant assigned to Alpha Company, 2nd Battalion, 108th Infantry Regiment, New York Army National Guard, is the non-commissioned officer winner. Cozens was sponsored by 1st Sgt. Daniel Markle, who is also Cozens' unit first sergeant. Soldiers in the rank of sergeant through sergeant first class compete in the NCO category, while those in the rank of private through specialist compete in the enlisted category. With this victory, Cozens move on to the next round of competition. Cozens won the four day event which tested everything from his military knowledge and skills, physical fitness, marksmanship and stamina. He went up against Soldiers from eight other states in the region which spans from Maine all the way through New York and New Jersey, winning along side Cpl. Joseph Ryan who won the enlisted category. "I am very proud of Sgt. 1st Class Martin Cozens and Cpl. Joseph Ryan," said Command Sgt. Major David Piwowarski, command sergeant major of the New York Army National Guard. "They outperformed a tough and ready field of competitors from the region and won it all. They outran, outshot and outthought the competition. They are truly the New York Army National Guard's best warriors." Coming up next is the competition for the overall Army National Guard's 2019 Best Warrior which is being hosted by the Oklahoma Army National Guard at Camp Gruber, Okla., July 13-20. This next round will determine the best warriors of the entire Army National Guard, who then go on to compete against the winners from active duty and Army Reserve. The tasks in these competitions are designed to simulate what a Soldier might experience in combat. Passing a physical fitness test is mandatory, however failing any of the other tasks will only lead to a lower score as they continue through the competition. Tasks the Soldiers get evaluated on include: Obstacle course Call for indirect fire Weapon qualification Day and night land navigation Stress shooting where Soldiers must negotiate obstacles and perform physical tasks while shooting Hands-on skills lanes Cozens works full time as an analyst for the New York State Counter Drug Task Force since May 2017, starting just after he enlisted in the New York Army National Guard after serving more than six years on active duty with the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum. He has deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2013 and has been awarded the Pathfinder badge, Expert Infantryman Badge and Combat Infantryman Badge.

Carson is NYANG Honor Guard Manager of the Year

Staff Sgt. Michael Carson, a Clark Mills resident stationed at the Eastern Air Defense Sector, is the New York Air National Guard's Honor Guard Program Manager of the Year. A computer systems technician with the 224th Support Squadron, Carson volunteered to lead the Honor Guard as an additional duty. As program manager, Carson trained and supervised 15 Airmen, coordinated 35 funeral details and 28 color guard events, and orchestrated honor guard support for assumption of command and retirement ceremonies. Carson will now go on to compete against other state winners for the overall Air National Guard award. "Being named the best Honor Guard program manager in an organization as large as the New York Air National Guard is a remarkable accomplishment," said Col. Paul M. Bishop, 224th Air Defense Group (ADG) Commander. "On behalf of everyone in the unit, I want to publicly congratulate Staff Sgt. Carson. He has spent countless hours of personal time performing honor guard duties and this award is recognition of that selfless dedication." The 224th ADG is composed of the 224th Air Defense Squadron and 224th Support Squadron, located in Rome, and Detachment 1 and Detachment 2 that serve in the Washington, D.C. area. New York Army National Guard Chief Warrant Officer 5 James McCauley was promoted today, at the Army Aviation Flight Facility, joined by his wife Amy, daughters Samantha and Quinn, sister Amy, and his parents Patrick and Anne. McCauley currently lives with his wife in Rhinebeck, N.Y., and works as a Standardization and Instructor Pilot for UH-60A/L Blackhawks in the National Guard.

Riddick serves as Senior Director at the 224th Air Defense Squadron (ADS), which is part of the 224th Air Defense Group (ADG). The 224th ADG is composed of the 224th Air Defense Squadron and 224th Support Squadron, located in Rome, and Detachment 1 and Detachment 2 that serve in the Washington, D.C. area. The 224th ADG provides the forces to conduct the Eastern Air Defense Sector's (EADS) mission. Part of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), the Sector is responsible for the air defense of the eastern U.S. Air National Guard promotions are based on overall performance, attitude, leadership ability and development potential. These promotions additionally recognize the best qualified Airmen and attract and retain the highest caliber Citizen Soldiers for a career in the New York Air National Guard.
