The New York Army National Guard's 2nd Squadron, 101st Cavalry welcomed nine newly promoted non-commissioned officers (NCOs) into its leadership ranks during a ceremony held during scheduled unit training April 13, 2018 at Fort Drum, N.Y. The 2-101st Cavalry, the reconnaissance, surveillance and target acquisition squadron based in Niagara Falls, held an NCO induction ceremony to celebrate the new Soldiers joining the ranks of a professional noncommissioned officer corps.

German, the Adjutant General of New York, announces the recent award recognitions for members of the New York Army National Guard who participated in the humanitarian assistance and disaster relief support missions following the devastation caused by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria in 2017. "The support of our New York National Guard in the Caribbean following Hurricanes Irma and Maria was nothing short of exceptional, and our Soldiers are the reason for that success," German said. "Our Citizen Soldiers are used to responding here at home, so the effort to move troops and equipment to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands presented unique challenges. The presentation of the Humanitarian Service Medal is a great reflection of our Soldiers' commitment to serve others," German said. The Department of Defense approved the Humanitarian Service Medal on March 29, 2018 for Soldiers who provided meritorious participation in operations of a humanitarian nature. More than 400 Army National Guard Soldiers will be eligible to receive the award. Presentations will be made at the unit level at a future date.

Castleton resident Jennifer Raub- Scott, a veteran of Iraq was promoted to master sergeant during a ceremony held at the Scotia Glenville Armed Forces Reserve Center in Glenville, N.Y. on February 11th, 2018. Raub-Scott enlisted in the New York Army National Guard in March of 1998 as a paralegal specialist. Her first unit of assignment was Headquarters and Support Company, 204th Engineer Battalion. After a short break in service in 2004, she re-enlisted again in early 2005, and became an intelligence analyst. She served again in the 204th Engineer Battalion until 2009, when she transferred to the 501st Ordnance Battalion where she served as a Tech Intel Analyst. From 2010 to 2011, she deployed to Iraq in support of Operation New Dawn. Upon redeployment, she transferred to the Intel and Sustainment Company, 42nd Infantry Division in 2012, where she served as a senior intelligence sergeant. Raub- Scott's next assignment will be at the Joint Force Headquarters, in the military intelligence section where she will serve as the chief intelligence non-commissioned officer. Raub-Scott's military education include; the senior leader course, advanced leader course, and electronic warfare crew course. Her awards and decorations include; the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the NCO Professional Development Ribbon. Raub-Scott also holds 104 credits towards a Bachelor's Degree in Social Sciences from Empire State University. Raub-Scott resides in Castleton with her husband Chief Warrant Officer Three Tom Scott also a member of the New York Army National Guard and their two boys, Wayne and Ben.

SCOTIA, N.Y. - Maj. Sandra Stoquert, a resident of Camden, New York, took command of the 109th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron at the New York Air National Guard's 109th Airlift Wing during a ceremony at Stratton Air National Guard Base on Feb. 12. As the squadron commander, Stoquert is responsible for managing the safe, reliable, and timely flightline maintenance and sortie generation of all 109th Wing-assigned LC-130H and C-130H aircraft. The Aircraft Maintenance Squadron's Airmen are responsible for supporting annual Operations Deep Freeze and Raven Dew which are conducted in the polar regions of Antarctica and Greenland. Stoquert served as the New York Air National Guard's executive officer at Joint Forces Headquarters New York prior to taking command of the Aircraft Maintenance Squadron. Her awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal and the Air Force Achievement Medal. On the civilian side, Stoquert is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor for the Adirondack Central School District. She leads, organizes and plans group and individual counseling for at-risk students. Stoquert resides in Camden with her husband, Master Sgt. Frederick Stoquert III. Her son, Petty Officer 1st Class Jason Carly, is stationed at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Washington. She is the daughter of John and Sandra LaVine of Rome, New York.

New York Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Melanie Groff, a Schenectady resident, was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal during a ceremony held at the Division of Military and Naval Affairs Headquarters in Latham, N.Y. on December 21. Groff received the award in recognition for her two years of exceptional service as the aid to Maj. Gen. Anthony German, the Adjutant General for the New York National Guard. Groff joined the National Guard in 2005 as an intelligence analyst and was assigned to the 501st Ordnance Battalion. In 2009 Groff deployed as a Military Police Team Leader with the 206th Military Police Company to Basra, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Upon her return in 2010, she transferred to the 727th Law and Order Detachment where she served as a Military Police Team Leader. In July 2014, Groff was selected to become a full-time National Guard Soldier where she worked in the Intelligence and Security Directorate. In 2015 she started working as the aide to the Adjutant General. Her future assignment working for the National Guard will be in Glenville, N.Y., where she will serve as the Training Non-Commissioned Officer for the 42nd Infantry Division Intelligence and Sustainment Company. Her awards and decorations include; the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal , National Defense Service Medal , Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terror Service Medal , Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Non Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Combat Action Badge , and the Meritorious Unit Commendation.

New York Army National Guard member Lucian McCarty, a Schuylerville resident, was promoted to staff sergeant during a ceremony held at the Division of Military and Naval Affairs Headquarters in Latham, N.Y. on December 21. McCarty joined the National Guard in 2013 as a motor transport operator and was assigned to the 427th Brigade Support Battalion. In 2015, McCarty became a full-time National Guard Soldier and currently serves as the aide to the Director of the Joint Staff at the New York National Guard headquarters. McCarty previously worked as a newspaper reporter for eight years, writing for various newspapers in New Hampshire, Maine and New York, and most recently at The Saratogian in Saratoga Springs. McCarty resides in Schuylerville, N.Y. with his wife Amanda, son Atticus and his two daughters Ada and Mira.

Soldiers from the New York Army National Guard's 2nd Squadron, 101st Cavalry and the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team send holikday greetings to hometown communities from the Yavoriv Combat Training Center as members of the Joint Multinational Training Group-Ukraine. The troops are assisting in the training of Ukrainian Soldiers there.

New York Army National Guard Lt. Col Robert Romano, an Afghanistan veteran with more than 34 years of service, received his promotion to the rank of lieutenant colonel in a ceremony December 9, 2017 at the 42nd Infantry Division Headquarters in Troy, N.Y. Romano currently serves as the Staff Civil Affairs officer for the 42nd Infantry Division. In 1983, Romano began his military service entering the US Air Force and attending Basic Military Training at Lackland Air Force Base, T.X. He held various positions during his active duty tenure to include tactical fire team leader, weapons instructor and a flight security controller. In 1996, Romano transferred to the New York Army National Guard where he completed infantry school and assumed the role of platoon sergeant. Attending the reserve component Officer Candidate School program, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in July 2000. He completed the Military Intelligence Officer Basic Course, Fort Huachuca, A.Z. in 2002. In 2008, he deployed to Afghanistan with the 27th Infantry Brigade, serving as the Deputy Intelligence Officer and conducted numerous missions throughout the Kabul area. In 2010, he attended the Civil Affairs Branch qualification course, Fort Bragg, N.C. as one of first five National Guard Officers authorized to attend the course. Deploying again in January 2012, he was assigned to the US 3rd Army, serving in Kuwait as the Director of Host Nation Affairs. He conducted operations as a liaison to multiple foreign governments with an international staff of military members and civilians. His awards and decorations include; Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, NATO Service Medal, NCO Professional Development, Air Reserve Meritorious Service Ribbon, Global War On Terror Expeditionary Medal, Afghan Campaign Medal, Air Force Security Forces Master Badge, Air Force Aircraft Maintenance Master Badge, and the French Afghanistan Meritorious Service Medal His wife is an Air Force Master Sgt., assigned to the 105th Airlift Group, Stewart Air National Guard Base, Newburg N.Y. He has one child, Michelle, who is attending Scranton University, enrolled in the Occupational Therapy Program.

He received an Army Commendation Medal during a ceremony on December 16 in Yavoriv, Ukraine. Rude belongs to the 2nd Battalion 101st Cavalry, which is headquartered at Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station. The Army Commendation Medal is awarded to Soldiers who have distinguished themselves by extraordinary achievement or significant meritorious service. During a trip to Lviv, the Soldiers came across a man unconscious in the street. Rude and the other two Soldiers quickly assessed the situation and took action, administered CPR to the incapacitated man and kept back the gathering crowd of onlookers. The three Soldiers continued to render aid until an ambulance crew arrived on scene and took over the patient's care. Col. Dennis Deeley, the training group commander, presented the awards during a ceremony at Ukraine's Yavoriv Combat Training Center. The Army National Guard Soldiers assigned to Deeley's training team are responsible for assisting in the training of Ukrainian Army troops at the Yavoriv Combat Training Center. The Soldiers mobilized in October and took over the mission from an Oklahoma Army National Guard team on Nov. 22.
