Future Leader Class for NY Army National Guard Soldiers held at Camp Smith April 6-20

CORTLANDT MANOR, NY (04/04/2019) — Twenty-three New York Army National Guard Soldiers from across the state who have been identified as potential leaders will take part in the two-week Future Leaders Course being conducted from April 6 to April 20 at the Camp Smith Training Site in Cortlandt Manor.

The course is designed to help Soldiers in the rank of specialist prepare to take on the tasks and responsibilities of being a sergeant, one of the non-commissioned officers who lead small units in the Army. The focus of the training will be on individual Soldier skills.

During the two-week training program the Soldiers will learn about troop leading procedures, drill and ceremonies, and counseling Soldiers during class room instruction. They will also hone their marksmanship skills with the M-4, be trained in combat lifesaving, conduct the new Army Combat Fitness Test, and train in map reading and land navigation.

This is the third year the New York Army National Guard has conducted this two week training program. Commanders from units across New York are asked to identify Soldiers in the rank of specialist who they think will make good non-commissioned officers.

The goal is to give these Soldiers a leg up when they get to the Basic Leaders Course, according to New York Army National Guard Command Sgt. Major David Piwowarski, the senior enlisted leader for the New York Army National Guard.
