Poughkeepsie resident Curtiss Moss becomes senior enlisted Soldier in National Guard's Harlem Hellfighters
Cortlandt Manor, N.Y. (04/26/2021) — New York Army National Guard Command Sgt. Major Curtis Moss, a Poughkeepsie resident and veteran of the Iraq War, assumed new duties as the highest ranking enlisted Soldier in the 369th Sustainment Brigade during a ceremony held Saturday, April 24 at Camp Smith Training Site in Cortlandt Manor.
The brigade carries the lineage and honors of the 369th Infantry Regiment, the famous Harlem Hellfighters, of World War I. The unit is configured to provide logistic support to division sized Army units.
As the brigade command sergeant major, Moss is the key advisor on enlisted Soldier training and discipline to Col. Seth Morgulas, the brigade commander.
Moss replaced Command Sgt. Major Andrew Lampkins.
Moss has served in the Army and the Army National Guard since 1987.
Moss served in Germany and Fort Carson, Colorado from 1987 until 1991. After a break in service he enlisted in the 1st Battalion, 156th Field Artillery of the New York Army National Guard in 1996 as a cannon crewman.
In October 2001 he was among the Soldiers and Airmen who responded to the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. He performed security missions at JFK International Airport and LaGuardia Airport.
Moss became a full-time National Guard Soldier in September 2002, serving as the readiness non-commissioned officer for Bravo Battery, 1st Battalion 258th Field Artillery.
In January 2004 he was mobilized for service in Iraq and deployed as a platoon sergeant. He led 32 Soldiers conducting convoy security and force protection missions.
His assignments have included serving as platoon sergeant, readiness non-commissioned officer, battery first sergeant, battalion operations sergeant, fires and operations sergeant major, operations sergeant major and battalion command sergeant major.
Moss's awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, and the Order of St. Barbara for excellence in artillery.
He and his wife have one son, two daughters, and five grandchildren.
