Gloversville resident Robert Olsen honored for 36 years of service to National Guard
Latham, NY (04/29/2022) — Robert Olsen, known as Bobbyt to those who worked with him, a Gloversville resident, was honored for his 36 years as an employee of the New York State Division of Military and Naval Affairs during a retirement ceremony on April 28 at New York National Guard headquarters in Latham.
Olsen's last role for the agency, which oversees the New York National Guard, was superintendent of the headquarters facility in Latham.
Olsen began his career in 1986 at the Gloversville Armory. He served in a variety of positions to include maintenance assistant, mechanic, maintenance supervisor, assistant plant superintendent and finally his job overseeing the headquarters complex.
Olsen also served for 23 years as an infantryman in the New York Army National Guard, while working for the Division of Military and Naval Affairs. He retired from the National guard in 2003.
Major General Ray Shields, the Adjutant General of New York, praised Olsen for his work in renovating the building and handling major construction projects.
He awarded Olsen with the New York State Conspicuous Service Medal, a state flag flown of the capital and a retirement plaque.
His wife, Roberta Olsen, was also recognized for her support of her husband over the years with a certificate of appreciation from the adjutant general and a bouquet of flowers.
