Clifton Park National Guard officer takes command of headquarters detachment for NY National Guard

Latham, NY (08/02/2021) — New York Army National Guard Major Doug Berinstein, a Clifton Park resident, has assumed command of the Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment (HHD) for the Joint Force Headquarters - New York.

Berinstein took command of the company during an August change of command ceremony at the Latham Armory. Berinstein replaces Major Amy Crounse who retires from military service.

As company commander, Berinstein will be responsible for leading 321 Soldiers who work in the state headquarters. The headquarters detachment includes Soldiers who work for the two-star general who commands the New York National Guard.

"Over the past year and a half, the wide array of missions could not have been possible without by our National Guard without HHD Soldiers," said Maj. Gen. Michel Natali, the Assistant Adjutant General for the Army Guard, who presided over the ceremony.

"Remember that our Soldiers and their families are our most important resources."

"Congratulations, Doug, on your command. I and the rest of the New York National Guard leadership have the utmost confidence in your leadership," he said. "Use this command as an opportunity to grow as an officer and leader."

Berinstein addressed the senior staff, family and his new Soldiers.

"Thank you for the kind words, confidence and for this opportunity. It is a great honor to be selected as commander. As the commander, it is my duty to lead," Berinstein said. "I look forward to working with the Soldiers and directorates of the Joint Force Headquarters in our mission."

Douglas Berinstein began his career in 2006, enlisting in the Field Artillery and completing basic training in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Berinstein received his officer's commission in May 2009 as a military police officer and was assigned to 206th Military Police Company as a platoon leader.

Berinstein deployed in February 2012 to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba after a transfer to the 107th Military Police Company and served as platoon leader and later as company executive officer.

He transferred to the 104th Military Police Battalion Headquarters in 2013 as an assistant operations officer and promoted to captain.

He transferred to the Joint Forces Headquarters in January 2016 and served on the Joint Staff in the operations directorate before serving in the 102nd Military Police Battalion Headquarters in June 2017 as the battalion logistics officer.

After his promotion to major in September 2020, Berinstein served at the Camp Smith Training Site as the Garrison executive officer.

Berinstein is a graduate of the Military Police Officer Basic Course and the Logistics and Military Police Captain Career Course and is currently enrolled in the Command and General Staff College. He earned his law degree from Albany Law School and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from New England College.

Berinstein and his wife Rebecca have two children, Alex and Logan.
