Lockport resident Anthony Giamberdino is named top enlisted leader in 1,600-Soldier Buffalo-based 153rd Troop Command
Buffalo, New York (05/11/2022) — Lockport resident Anthony Giamberdino, a command sergeant major in the New York Army National Guard, and a veteran of the Iraq War,will become the top enlisted Soldier in the New York Army National Guard's 153rd Troop Command on Saturday, May 14.
Giamberdino will be the highest-ranking enlisted Soldier in the 1,600-member troop command which has Soldiers located across New York. He reports directly to Colonel Christopher Guilmette, the incoming commander of the 153rd Troop Command who replaces Colonel Jamey Barcomb that same weekend.
The 153rd Troop Command, with a strength of 1,600 Soldiers is headquartered at the historic Connecticut Street Armory in Buffalo and is the higher headquarters for the 102nd Military Police Battalion in Auburn, the 204th Engineer Battalion in Binghamton, and the 501st Explosive Ordnance Disposal Battalion in Schenectady.
Giamberdino will replace Command Sgt. Major Marc Maynard who is replacing Command Sgt. Major Thomas Ciampolillo as highest-ranking enlisted Soldier in the 53rd Troop Command, headquartered at Camp Smith.
The change of responsibility ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 14 at Camp Smith Training Site, which is the New York National Guard's major training location in the Hudson Valley near Peekskill.
Giamberdino began his military career in August of 1991 at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri as a Combat Engineer Crewman with the U.S. Army Reserves.
In January 1993, he transferred to the New York Army National Guard and attended Camp Grafton, North Dakota to become a Combat Engineer in the 827th Sapper Company.
Giamberdino had a break in service from 1997 to 1999 when he returned to the Guard's 827th Combat Engineer Company. After deploying in 2004 to Balad, Iraq, he returned to the new 187th Engineer Company.
In September 2001, Giamberdino deployed New York City as part of the New York National Guard response to the attacks on the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.
In 2004, he served in the 827th Engineer Company and deployed with the 2nd Battalion 108th Infantry to Balad, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom II. He was assigned as the first sergeant of the 152nd Engineer Company in 2006, and served in that position until 2016 when he became the command sergeant major of Binghamton's 204th Engineer Battalion.
He was activated for several state response missions within New York State including: the october storm of 2006 which caused flooding in the Binghamton area; Hurricanes Irene in 2011 and Superstorm Sandy in 2012, along with the Binghamton Floods and Operation Lake Effect 2017 .
In 2019, he was selected as the Command Sergeant Major of the 501st OD Battalion in Glenville, New York. In February 2020, Giamberdino was selected to be the Senior Enlisted Advisor filling the Command Sergeant Major position in the Joint Task Force-Empire Shield headquartered at Fort Hamilton, NY.
Joint Task Force Empire Shield is a state active duty force which augments security in New York City.
His military education includes five Noncommissioned Officer Development Courses culminating in his graduation from the Sergeants Major Academy in 2017. His civilian education includes 91 semester credit hours at Erie Community College and the University of Buffalo.
Giamberdino has been awarded the Engineer "DeFlury" Medal. He recently retired from the Niagara County Sheriff's Office-Crime Scene Unit and is employed full time on State Active-Duty orders with Joint Taske Force Empire Shield.
He and his wife Kelly, who is prior Navy, reside in Lockport, New York. He and his wife have four children Anthony, Alexander, who is currently deployed with the 82nd Airborne Division, Morgan, and Mia.
