NY Army National Guard Sgt. Maj. Daniel Brunner, a Saratoga Springs resident, retires after 22 years of service

Latham, NY (08/30/2019) — New York Army National Guard Sgt. Maj. Daniel Brunner, a Saratoga Springs resident, and a veteran of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, has retired after 22 years of service in the U.S. Marine Corps and the New York Army National Guard.

Brunner was presented with the Meritorious Service Medal and the New York State Conspicuous Service Medal by Major General Ray Shields, the Adjutant General of New York, during retirement ceremonies at New York National Guard headquarters in Latham on August 28.

Brunner enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in October 1997 and served as an infantry machine gunner. During his service in the Marine Corps he served as a basic school weapons instructor, machine gun team-leader and squad leader.

In April 2002 he joined the New York Army National Guard.

His duties in the National Guard included human resources specialist, human resources sergeant, and battalion administrative noncommissioned officer, training noncommissioned officer and battalion personal services noncommissioned officer. He also served as a headquarters company readiness noncommissioned officer and platoon sergeant, senior human resources sergeant for the 42nd Combat Aviation Brigade and the Enlisted Secretary to the General Staff for the 42nd Infantry Division.

In 2006 Brunner deployed with the 4th Personnel Services Detachment to Iraq and in 2013 he deployed to Afghanistan with the 42nd Combat Aviation Brigade.

He is a graduate of the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy, Senior Enlisted Joint Professional Military Education Course, Senior Leader Course, Basic Non-Commissioned Officer Course, Primary Leadership Development Course, Advanced Machine Gun Training Course, Jungle Warfare Training Course, and Corporals Leadership Course.

Brunner's awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Army Overseas Service Ribbon, Navy Overseas Service Ribbon, Army Reserve Component Overseas Training Ribbon, Army Driver and Mechanic Badge, Navy Achievement Medal, Navy Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal, and Army and Marine Corp Good Conduct Medals.

Brunner and his wife Erin have four daughters; Kayla, Madison, Ava and Sophia.
