NY Naval Militia Capt. Lawrence Weill, a Walworth resident, is recognized as outstanding Naval Militia Member

Latham, NY (05/07/2018) — New York Naval Militia Capt. Lawrence Weill, a Walworth resident was recognized for outstanding service during ceremonies at Division of Military and Naval Affairs headquarters on April 27, 2018.

Weill received the New York State Human Service Medal and the the New York State Military Commendation Medal.

The Commendation Medal recognized Weill's receipt of the Josephthal Trophy, which is presented to the outstanding Naval Militia member of the year.

The Josephthal Trophy is named for Rear Admiral Louis Josephthal, the commander of the Naval Militia from 1925 to 1929, who established an award to honor outstanding members of the Naval Militia.

The New York Naval Militia is composed of current Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard Reserve members who have also agreed to serve on state active duty when called by the state of New York. They put the skills they've honed in federal military service to work for New York.

The Naval Militia also operates a fleet of nine patrol boats which respond to state emergencies, augment law enforcement agencies and support the U.S. Coast Guard.

The Human Service Medal was presented to Weill in recognition of the role in played in support Naval Militia members who assisted the New York National Guard in dealing with flooding along Lake Ontario during 2017.

Weill currently serves as the commander of the Naval Militia's western command.

He is a 1982 graduate of Officer Candidate School and is a Navy Surface Warfare Officer. His Navy and Navy Reserve assignments have included electronic warfare officer, navigator and assistant operations officer, tactical action officer, commander of the Navy Reserve ships, USS Lamoure County and USS Comte De Grasse.

He has also commanded Navy Reserve Detachments in Horseheads and Buffalo and as training officer and chief of staff at U.S. Joint Forces Command in Norfolk, Virginia.

His awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and numerous campaign and service awards.

He holds a Bachelor's Degree from Hartwick College and a Master's Degree from Rochester Institute of Technology.
